If a bike is stolen from the street, a car or home, the owner needs the serial number to report the theft to the police. Most people don't keep this number handy. However, when a bicycle is registered the police can recall information quickly from the computer. The registration records are cross-referenced by name as well as by serial number and registration number.
Campus Safety Officers will photograph your bike, record its make and serial number, and your contact information, and store it on our database–at no charge. That same information will become immediately available to law enforcement authorities should you report your bike missing in the future. Also, when you register your bike with us, we will provide you with a voucher to use at the Campus Bookstore to obtain a FREE U-Lock to help you protect your bike from theft. By having this information on file, the opportunity to find and recover your bike after it is stolen is greatly improved.
If you would also like to register your bike with the National Bike Registry.
